Remembering Loved Ones on Your Wedding Day

Wedding, Wedding Planning

On the best day of my life so far, my only wish was for every person that I love to be there to witness me marry my soul mate. I, like many people around the world, have lost loved ones that should've been there on that day. For me, that someone was my dad. In my mind, I can picture my father wearing a tuxedo, smiling as he is about to give his only daughter away. His hair combed with only a spritz of water as he always used to do on special days.

Though they may not be able to be there in person, there are many ways we can honour and remember the ones we love that have passed on, so that wherever they are, they may still be there. Here are some suggestions for tributes to your loved ones.

Save them a seat

By placing a framed photograph of your loved one on a seat in the front row means that you can see their face when you look into the crowd. You may also want to add a “reserved” sign, as a sentiment to the thought that they were always supposed to be there. Another beautiful idea is to stop and place a flower on the seat as you walk down the aisle.

Bouquet or buttonhole charms

Some brides choose to wear photos of their loved ones on their bouquet and some grooms may like to wear photos of their loved ones as a pin. Click here to see an example of an Etsy store that makes a wide range of beautiful bouquet and boutonniere charms . These kinds of shops really make it as simple as selecting which charm you would like and sending through your photos of your loved ones. This way, you can carry them with you on your wedding day.

An acknowledgment during a speech

My best friend/ maid of honour mentioned my father in her speech and it absolutely choked me up. It was nice to remember him at various points of the day and it reminded me that I was not the only one thinking of him.

A special setup

Similarly to the saved seat, a table displaying your loved ones photos is a sweet tribute whether it be at your ceremony, reception or both. Some people like to light candles in their memory on the table, or place poems or sayings near the photos. As your guests walk past the table, a thought goes out to your loved ones and you can enjoy the happy memories the pictures bring with them.

Some people choose not to do tributes as the memories are just too raw and painful. Whichever you may choose, they will always be with you in your memories, thoughts and forever in your heart.
